Why we use ConvertKit to grow our author platform

You need a great Email CRM to manage any product

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times. Once you write and publish a book, you have become a small business owner. An entrepreneur. A salesperson.

Now it’s time to treat your book like a product.

Which means – marketing is important.

Contrary to the rumors that circulated a few years back, email marketing is not dead. In fact, many authors swear by the email list as their greatest resource when it comes time to launching their next book.

The Email list is crucial for book launches

So if you’re going to market your book, you truly need to have an email list. A large Facebook group is great. A massive social media following – wonderful! But you don’t OWN those. You OWN an email list.

It takes a lot of time and concerted effort to grow a solid email list and grow them as raving fans through your emails. But if done properly, it is SO worth it!

I’ve tried a lot of email management systems. I’ve used Mailchimp, Aweber, Constant Contact. They all have their pros and cons. And they may be the right solution if you only publish books on one topic and are not seeking other email marketing opportunities.

However… IF you consider yourself an author entrepreneur¬†and IF you’re seeking multiple streams of revenue and IF you determine email marketing will be a part of your strategy… ConvertKit is probably what you are looking for.

Also, IF you just want to have a very streamlined, easy way to add new people to your email list, get them through a sequence of emails to grow them and nurture them, and want to be able to segment them so that, for example, if they purchase a product or a book, you can stop sending them sales emails about it, ConvertKit can also be for you.

I started using ConvertKit a few years ago after I saw a presentation on a blogging summit. I was pretty impressed by all the things I could do that I could NOT do in other email management systems. I wanted to be able to have multiple forms, lead magnets, and optins for my different subject areas, businesses, etc. I wanted to be able to have someone join my list and have a bunch of follow up stops happen automatically.

ConvertKit has a lot of bells and whistles, but it can also be very simple as well. And their customer support is great.

I created a 5-part tutorial for the new ConvertKit user, just to give a quick overview of the different elements. Enjoy!
