Quarter 3 2026 Instagram Algorithm & Trend Report (Win at Instagram even if you hate the algorithm)

2026 Instagram Algorithm Updates for Authors Quarter 3

Here’s Our Q3 2026 Instagram Algorithm & Trends Report for Authors

If you’re an author trying to keep up with Instagram trends and what’s working right now, you’re in the right place. The platform has shifted significantly in 2026, especially around authenticity, AI labeling, and how the algorithm rewards profiles over individual posts. Q3 is when authors who lean into connection are going to win.1z

Understanding the 2026 Instagram algorithm is essential for maximizing your reach and engagement on the platform.

Here’s what authors need to keep in mind this quarter:

  • Instagram Instants are a fun and effective tool for authors to try. These images will be shown only to the people who follow you and you follow back. There are no captions, but people can DM you a response. Similar to Snapchat, this is a great way to keep you and your book front and center for this group of people.
  • Profiles matter more than individual posts. Per Adam Mosseri’s 2026 direction, Instagram is rewarding cohesive profiles and creators with personality over polished one-off posts (source).
  • Authenticity over polish. Real voices cut through AI-generated content. Mosseri has openly stated that originality is being rewarded.
  • Reels can now be up to 20 minutes long. Long-form storytelling is back in play (source).
  • Trial Reels can now be scheduled. Test content with non-followers before publishing to your main grid (source).
  • You can finally reorder carousel slides after posting. No more deleting and reuploading (source).
  • “Your Algorithm” is rolled out to all English-speaking users. Authors can now help readers shape their own feeds toward bookish content.

Whether you’re launching your debut or nurturing a growing backlist, Q3 is full of opportunity to show up smarter, not harder. While the best Instagram strategy will always be to connect with your ideal reader consistently, understanding the how your actions influence the Instagram algorithm in 2026 can reach more of your ideal readers.

By grasping the nuances of the 2026 Instagram algorithm, authors can tailor their strategies to connect with their audiences effectively.

How does the Instagram algorithm work in 2026?

Instants is a game changer, and I’ll stand by that.

I know the collective eye-roll when it dropped was loud. “Ugh, another Snapchat knockoff.” But here’s what most people are missing: when Instagram rolls out a new feature, the algorithm rewards you for using it early. Show up for the new thing, and the platform shows up for you. That’s just how it works.

Beyond the strategy side, Instants gives you a real, unfiltered way to be present with the people you actually care about. No perfectly curated grid energy. Just you, in the moment, being human. (Learn more from my Reel.)

Why it matters for authors: Instants gives you a low-pressure way to show up real and unfiltered. Snap your book at a coffee shop, start a “Where’s My Book Today” series, or share the messy writing desk and third cup of coffee. Social media is about being social, and this feature was built for exactly that kind of connection.

Carousels Can Now Be Reordered After Posting

You can now rearrange photos and videos in a carousel even after publishing.

Why it matters for authors: Test what slide order pulls the most engagement, then optimize without losing your post’s stats. Perfect for chapter previews, character intros, and book recommendation carousels.

Reels Are Now Up to 20 Minutes Long

Major shift. Reels were capped at 90 seconds for years and now extend to 20 minutes.

Why it matters for authors: Long-form storytelling is back. Think mini-author talks, book readings, behind-the-scenes of your writing process, and Q&A sessions, all in Reels format. You no longer have to choose between short hooks and depth.

Trial Reels Can Now Be Scheduled

Instagram’s Trial Reels feature (test content with non-followers first) now lets you schedule in advance.

Why it matters for authors: 80% of creators who use Trial Reels see increased reach with non-followers. Schedule them during your high-traffic times without having to be online to post.

Built-In Teleprompter for Reels

Instagram added a teleprompter directly in the Reels creation flow on iOS. I’d still rather film in Instagram & then use Edits for captions, etc. Especially because Instagram processes videos from Edits at a higher quality & boosts visibility. The analytics within Edits are much better, as well.

Why it matters for authors: If you’ve been avoiding video because you stumble or forget what to say, you can now read your script while you film. Game-changer for nervous-on-camera authors.

“Your Algorithm” Is Available to All English-Speaking Users

Users can now manually set their interests for the Reels feed.

Why it matters for authors: Remind your readers and followers to add “bookish content,” your genre, or specific themes to their Your Algorithm settings. This is how you get prioritized in their feed long-term.

AI Content Labeling Is Tightening

Instagram is testing an account-level “AI Creator” label for accounts that consistently produce AI-generated content.

Why it matters for authors: Real, human, voice-driven content has never been more valuable.

Affiliate Links Direct in Reels

Eligible creators (18+, 1,000+ followers) can now tag up to 30 products in a single Reel using the “Add Products” feature.

Why it matters for authors: Your book is a product. Bookshop.org, Amazon, Audible, and other retailers can be tagged directly in your Reels for in-app purchase. No more “link in bio” friction.

You Can Now Reorder Your Instagram Grid

Instagram rolled out Grid Reordering globally on June 8, 2026, letting you drag and drop any post into any position on your profile without deleting or reposting (source).

Why it matters for authors: Your grid is often the first thing a potential reader sees, so now you can treat it like a curated bookshelf. Pull an older launch post back to the front for a release anniversary, group your book aesthetic together, or lead with your best-performing content. Reordering keeps all the original likes, comments, and dates intact, so you get the curated look without losing any engagement history.

Reels & Author Trends to Try for Instagram July 2026:

Use this fun trend to be tongue in cheek. As an author, change it from “standing in this house I’m selling” to “reading my book in different places” and hold a copy of your book for visibility.

Hate filming reels? Here’s a hilarious way to call attention to it and get people commenting/laughing. Film yourself typing or doing something author related when you show up with the NO post it note.

We love this trend, although it will definitely be an advanced edit.
