KDP’s MOBI Phase-Out: What You Need to Know

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) has announced it will no longer support MOBI files, recommending EPUB as the standard format moving forward. Here’s what you need to know and how to transition smoothly. So here’s what you need to know about KDP’s MOBI phase-out.

Why the Change?

Amazon is aligning with industry standards by adopting EPUB, the most widely accepted ebook format. This change simplifies publishing processes, enhances reader experience, and ensures better compatibility across different devices.

If you’ve published with .mobi files, there’s no requirement to change them, however, there will be no more support to .mobi files, and it’s generally a good idea to go ahead and make the swap. While you’re doing this, it’s a great opportunity to review your keywords and categories, make sure you’ve updated to the new category system, checked off the AI questions, and review all of your other metadata.

You can hire someone to help you convert your files – the person who designed your original ebook can probably help, or you can seek someone out (ask your author friends!) OR you can do it on your own. Amazon has a free tool, Kindle Create, but there are several other options as well.

It’s highly recommended that you take action on KDP’s MOBI Phase-Out

How to Convert MOBI to EPUB:

Using Kindle Create:

  1. Open Kindle Create and select your manuscript.
  2. Format your ebook using built-in tools.
  3. Export your completed ebook directly as an EPUB file.

Using Vellum:

Vellum is a great tool and easy to use for formatting books. With a one-time license fee, you can format all of your books and export for print, epub, and more. It’s very simple to use, although not recommended best for complex books (picture books, specialty books.) You can learn more about Vellum here. (aff link)

  1. Open your existing project or import your manuscript into Vellum.
  2. Ensure formatting is set to your preferences.
  3. Generate your EPUB file with one click.

Other Tools:

  • Calibre: Free and versatile; great for bulk conversions.
  • Draft2Digital: Easy-to-use platform that also distributes your ebook to multiple retailers.
  • Reedsy Book Editor: Simple online editor that exports professional EPUB files.
  • PublishDrive: Offers a free public ebook conversion tool that generates high-quality, ready-to-publish EPUB files.

What Authors Should Do Now:

  • Check your existing publications and update files from MOBI to EPUB.
  • Test new EPUB files on various devices to ensure compatibility.
  • Replace your old MOBI files on KDP promptly to avoid any interruption in availability.
  • Review and update all your metadata while in KDP
