The AEO Author Audit Framework™

By Alexa Bigwarfe

The AEO Author Audit Framework™ is a five-step methodology for getting your book cited inside the answers that ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode generate when readers ask for book recommendations. It was developed by Alexa Bigwarfe (founder, Write Publish Sell) and is taught inside Book Launch in a Box.

The AEO Author Audit Framework, a 5-step framework for getting cited in AI answers

Definition

The AEO Author Audit Framework™ is a structured audit of an author website across five categories: Extractable First Paragraphs, Question-Structured Headings, Quote-Worthy Elements, Schema Stack, and AI Crawler Access. Authors who pass all five categories are dramatically more likely to be quoted directly inside AI-generated answers than authors who don’t.

Why the Framework Exists

When a reader asks ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity for a book recommendation, the AI doesn’t search the internet at random. It scans available content for specific structural and signal characteristics, then quotes the source that scores highest. Most author websites are built for human readers, not for AI extraction. The framework closes that gap.

It also gives authors a single, shared vocabulary for diagnosing why their content isn’t getting cited and what to fix.

The Five Steps

Step 1: Extractable First Paragraphs

Every cornerstone blog post should open with a clean, declarative answer to the post’s core question. AI engines disproportionately quote from the first 100 to 200 words of an article. A first paragraph that buries the answer or opens with throat-clearing forfeits the citation. A first paragraph that states the answer in sentence one, qualifies it in sentence two, and expands from there gets pulled into AI answers.

Step 2: Question-Structured Headings

H2 and H3 headings should be formatted as the actual questions readers ask, not noun-phrase labels. “How long does a book launch take?” gets quoted more often than “Launch Timeline.” AI engines preferentially extract content that’s already structured as Q&A, which is what they’re trying to deliver to the reader.

Step 3: Quote-Worthy Elements

Cornerstone posts should include the structural elements AI engines extract: numbered lists with specific numbers, comparison tables, TL;DR or Key Takeaways boxes at the top, one-sentence definitions of named terms, and an FAQ section with 5 to 8 real reader questions at the bottom. Each of these formats is dramatically more citable than flowing prose with the same content.

Step 4: Schema Stack

Schema markup (the invisible JSON-LD code that tells AI engines what a page is) is the most underused tool in author marketing. The minimum AEO-relevant schema stack for authors is: Person on the About page, Organization on the homepage, Article on every blog post, FAQPage on every post with an FAQ section, HowTo on tutorial posts, Book on individual book pages, and Course on paid programs. DefinedTerm schema is recommended on pages where you formally define a named framework or concept.

Step 5: AI Crawler Access

None of the other steps matter if AI crawlers literally cannot read your site. This step confirms three things: robots.txt explicitly allows the AI user agents (GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, anthropic-ai, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, CCBot, Applebot-Extended, Bytespider), Cloudflare’s “Block AI scrapers” toggle is OFF, and any security plugin (Wordfence, Sucuri) is not blocking AI bots. This step takes 15 minutes and is the foundation everything else sits on.

How to Use the Framework

Authors typically apply the framework one of three ways.

As a self-audit. Walk through each of the five steps on your own author site. Score each cornerstone post against the five categories (one point per category present, maximum 5). Posts scoring below 3 are invisible to AI search. Posts scoring 4 or higher are in the running for citations.

As a sprint. Apply the framework to your top three cornerstone posts in one focused week. The 5-Day AEO Sprint is the structured version of this approach.

As an ongoing standard. Apply the framework to every new blog post you publish going forward, and refresh your existing top 10 posts on a rolling basis. This builds the kind of compound visibility that produces consistent citations within 90 to 180 days.

What It’s Not

The framework is not a replacement for traditional SEO. It sits on top of standard SEO best practices (keyword research, internal linking, quality content, backlinks). The framework adds the AEO-specific structural layer that makes already-good content extractable by AI.

The framework is also not a one-time fix. Schema needs maintenance, FAQ blocks evolve as reader questions shift, and crawler-access settings can change when hosts update defaults. The framework is intended to be re-run on cornerstone content quarterly.

Run the GEO Foundation Audit First

The free GEO Audit is the diagnostic for the foundation this framework sits on top of. It scores your author website across the four GEO foundation areas: an indexed AI-discoverable presence, an author website with the right kinds of content, content quality AI can match to reader queries, and reader language (not author language) throughout your site. A 4-step, 24-point self-audit. About 20 minutes.

Run it first. The AEO framework above is what you apply once the GEO foundation is in place.
